Bringing Integrity Back to HVAC
Now that we are feeling some fall-ish temperatures, it’s a reminder to make sure your furnace is ready for the winter months ahead!
Here are 10 Essential Tips for Preparing Your HVAC for Winter in Colorado!
1. Replace Air Filters: Start the season with clean filters to enhance heating efficiency and air quality. We recommend replacing your filters now and keeping extras on hand for changes throughout the season, at least every 3 months, more often if you have pets and/or live in a dusty area.
2. Clean Vents and Ductwork: Dusty vents and dirty ductwork can restrict airflow and reduce your system's efficiency. Vacuum your vents and consider professional duct cleaning if it's been a while since your last service.
3. Test Your Furnace Early: Turn on your furnace early to ensure it’s operating smoothly. Listen for any strange noises or "off" smells. It is fairly normal to smell a little "dust burn-off" when your furnace first gets turned on, especially if you do not have A/C and the system hasn't run all summer. That smell should only last momentarily.
4. Check your Thermostat: If your thermostat has batteries, change them out if it’s been awhile. Check for any programs or settings you don’t want and make sure the screen/buttons function properly.
5. Check Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors: Now is a good time to check the batteries, expiration dates, and function of carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
6. Ensure Proper Clearance: Keep the area around indoor and outdoor units and vents clear. Make sure there is no outdoor debris (leaves, rocks, dirt, outdoor toys, and equipment) near the venting or any outdoor HVAC equipment. Inside, make sure vents and returns are free and clear of furniture, clothes, toys, etc. Do not store boxes or other materials close to the actual furnace unit.
7. Seal Air Leaks: Check for drafts around windows and doors. Seal any gaps to prevent warm air from escaping and cold air from entering your home.
8. Check Vents & Registers: Make sure all vents and registers are open and clear of anything that might block airflow.
9. Clean and Switch Direction of Ceiling Fan: Make sure your ceiling fan blades and casing are clean and dust-free, then switch the rotation of the fan to clockwise and keep on low to help circulate warm air all winter long!
10. Schedule a Professional HVAC Tune-Up with PH&C: Booking an early fall HVAC tune-up with Pendleton Heating & Cooling ensures your system is not only clean but also running safely and efficiently. A programmable thermostat can help you to save money on your energy bills by allowing you to control the temperature of your home when you are not there. You can program your thermostat to turn down the heat in the winter and turn up the air conditioning in the summer when you are away or asleep.
The best way to choose the right size HVAC system for your home is to have a load calculation performed by a qualified HVAC contractor. This calculation will take into account the size of your home, the number of windows and doors, the insulation value of your walls and attic, and the climate in your area.
